Kahoot!: A Good Game-based Tool for Teaching

Hi everyone, welcome to Runpings Blog!💓

I aim to be a good English teacher in China in the future

I am exploring some technologies or tools to be applied in my future teaching practice and glad to share my findings with you

I sincerely welcome the potential and experienced English teachers in China or other countries to communicate with me and please feel free to leave any comments😀

As an English teacher, one of the challenges you may face is finding some engaging ways to keep the students interested and motivated in learning. Hosting a fun and engaging game is a good way to facilitate students to learn and check if they understand the knowledge. During my study at the University of Warwick, I found some tutors were used to using Kahoot! in teaching, which make me terribly active in class and enjoy learning💁. So I really want to share this game-based tool with you.

💬What is Kahoot!?

Kahoot! is a digital game-based learning tool for ELT teaching, which allows teachers and learners to interact through competitive knowledge games. You can choose to design different kinds of games, such as quiz, jumble, discussion and survey.  Designing a quiz in the class is always the most popular one, which serves to add interest to class, enhance students' competition with each other and make them more focus on learning knowledge. Kahoot! can be played by multiple students at the same time, using their own devices to answer questions in real-time. In addition, this platform is free to use and available on the web or as a mobile app.

💬Why use Kahoot!?

Engaging and Interactive Learning: Kahoot! allows you to create quizzes and activities that are both fun and engaging. You can add images, videos, and audio to your quizzes to make them more visually appealing.

Customizable: Kahoot! allows you to customize your quizzes and activities to suit your teaching needs. You can create your own questions or choose from some pre-made quizzes by others, and you can set time limits and choose the number of questions in each quiz.

Flexibility: Kahoot! can be used in many ways to support your English teaching. You can create quizzes to test your students' knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and literary devices. You can also use Kahoot! to run spelling and pronunciation drills or to conduct a reading comprehension exercise.

Collaboration: Kahoot! also provides opportunities for group learning. You can create team-based activities or set up a game for the whole class to play together. This fosters a sense of teamwork and makes learning a more social and interactive experience.

💬How to start?

💬Limitations

Difficulty with open-ended questions: Kahoot! is not well-suited for open-ended questions, which may require more detailed responses from students.

Distraction and competition: The game-like nature of Kahoot! can sometimes lead to distraction and competition among students, detracting from the learning experience.

Technical issues: Kahoot! is a platform that needs internet connection, and technical issues may happen in the class, which can disrupt the learning experience.

Overall, Kahoot! is a great tool for English teachers who are looking to engage their students in fun and interactive learning activities. Whether you want to test your students' knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, or literary devices, Kahoot! provides a flexible and customizable platform to suit your needs. So why not give it a try and see how Kahoot! can enhance your teaching and inspire your students?

  2. Hi, Runping. Your blog is fantastic. I agree with Kailin:) that this platform is really really useful for teachers to enhance students' engagement. But I have to admit that I encountered some difficulties when incorporating it into my second peer teaching session, as some of my peers believed that using this platform for certain class activities was unproductive. Therefore, it is essential for educators to carefully evaluate when and how to utilize it in their classes.
